Bhringraj (Eclipta prostata): Bhringraj is the best remedy for liver ailment. It is a small herb which grows in marshy lands. The juice of the leaves, stems and roots is affective for curing cirrhosis of liver. Bhringaraj is commonly used as a deobstruent to promote bile flow and to protect the liver parenchymal tissue in viral hepatitis and other conditions involving hepatic enlargement.
Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), (Hog wood): The herb has been used in indigenous medicine from time immemorial. The plant contains a crystalline acid known as boerhavic acid, potassium nitrate and a brown mass consisting of tannins, phlobaphenes and reducing sugars.
Kasni (Chichorium intybus), (Chicory): Kasni flowers, seeds and roots are medicinally used in the treatment of liver disorders. Chicory juice in almost any combination, promotes the secretion of bile and is therefore very good for liver.
Sharpunkha (Tephrosia purpurea), (Wild Indigo): Tephrosia purpurea locally known as Sarapunkha, forms one of the most effective ingredients of formulations available in Indian market for liver ailments. In the traditional Indian medicine it is famous for its effectiveness in bilious febrile attacks, obstruction of liver and spleen apart. Pitpada (Fumaria officinalis): Fumaria officinalis has numerous traditional medicinal uses. Some of its many uses are: as a liver tonic, as a gallbladder tonic, as an emollient and as a diuretic. The juice from fumitory leaves was once decocted or distilled and added to syrups and essences. These were then prescribed "to open obstructions of liver and spleen; procure an abundance of urine; to help the gout and yellow jaundice; drive forth the plague and pestilence; to clarify the blood of saltish and choleric humours, the cause of leprosy, scabs, tetters [vesicular skin diseases], itchings, scurvy; and eruptive breakings out and similar scorbutic affections of the skin."
