Triphala Herbal Colon Cleansing

Triphala:

Through the food and water we are consuming everyday, we are ingesting toxins and microbes without our knowledge. These harmful substances in the gut are making us vulnerable to diseases and infections. The unhealthy components in the diet impair the normal functioning of the stomach, intestines and the liver. Internal cleansing helps to remove the toxic substances from our body. Triphala, a generic Ayurvedic preparation, acts as a powerful internal cleanser. By improving the function of the gastrointestinal tract, Triphala eases bowel movement and eliminates disease causing toxins and microbes from the body.

Ingredients in Triphala

Emblica officinalis (Amalaki, Indian gooseberry): Emblica officinalis, commonly known as Indian gooseberry or Amla, is a powerful antioxidant. The antioxidant property of the Emblica officinalis fruit is primarily attributed to its high ascorbic acid content. 100-gram Amla contains approximately 1,100mg to 1,700mg of ascorbic acid or vitamin C. By protecting the gastrointestinal tract from the free radicals, the antioxidant rich Emblica officinalis fruit could reduce gastrointestinal disorders developing owing to oxidative stress. Owing to its antioxidant activities, in Ayruveda, Emblica officinalis is classified as a Rasayana. In the traditional Indian medicine system, it is recommended for maintaining the health of the liver and the gastrointestinal tract. (Krishnaveni M, Mirunalini S. “Therapeutic potential of Phyllanthus emblica (amla): the ayurvedic wonder.” J Basic Clin Physiol Pharmacol. 2010;21(1):93-105).

Terminalia chebula (Haritaki): Among the three ingredients of Triphala, Terminalia chebula is the most powerful antioxidant compound. (Hazra B, Sarkar R, Biswas S, Mandal N. “Comparative study of the antioxidant and reactive oxygen species scavenging properties in the extracts of the fruits of Terminalia chebula, Terminalia belerica and Emblica officinalis.” BMC Complement Altern Med. 2010 May 13;10:20). Studies suggest that Terminalia chebula fruit helps to maintain the microbial balance in the gut. It inhibits growth of harmful intestinal bacteria without suppressing the growth of the beneficial lactic acid producing bacteria. (Kim HG, Cho JH, Jeong EY, Lim JH, Lee SH, Lee HS. “Growth-inhibiting activity of active component isolated from Terminalia chebula fruits against intestinal bacteria.” J Food Prot. 2006 Sep;69(9):2205-9).

Terminalia belerica (Bibhitaki): Terminalia belerica could protect the gastrointestinal tract from harmful microbes and toxins. It inhibits growth of Salmonella bacteria strains. Salmonella infections are one of the key causes of food borne illnesses worldwide. (Madani A, Jain SK. “Anti-Salmonella activity of Terminalia belerica: in vitro and in vivo studies.” Indian J Exp Biol. 2008 Dec;46(12):817-21). Terminalia belerica could also prevent liver dysfunction from exposure to toxic substances. (Anand KK, Singh B, Saxena AK, Chandan BK, Gupta VN, Bhardwaj V. “3,4,5-Trihydroxy benzoic acid (gallic acid), the hepatoprotective principle in the fruits of Terminalia belerica-bioassay guided activity.” Pharmacol Res. 1997 Oct;36(4):315-21).

Importance of internal cleansing

Constipation is a common gastrointestinal complaint. A person is said to be constipated if he/she finds it hard to eliminate hard and dry stool. Defecation might cause intense pain. A person who is constipated has to strain the anus muscles to pass bowel. Constipation is not a disease, but it is the symptom of an underlying disorder. Alternative medicine practitioners consider constipation as a sign of colon toxicity.

The colon absorbs water from the waste matter, as the feces moves through the colon and enters the rectum. If the colon absorbs too much water from the stool, the feces become hard, leading to constipation. This usually occurs, when the colon muscles contract too slowly.

Absence of enough dietary fiber in the diet is a common cause of constipation. Dehydration could make you constipated. Lack of exercises might slow down the muscle contraction speed of the colon. Constipation is a common side effect of certain medications. Intake of iron supplements, diuretic, antacids containing calcium and aluminum, certain painkillers, antidepressants, anticovulsants, antispasmodics and Parkinson’s disease medications increase the risk of constipation. Hormonal changes slow down movement of the intestinal muscles, leading to constipation. Constipation might be a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome. Suppressing the urge to pass bowel might harden the feces. Even excessive use of laxatives might cause constipation.

Your gastrointestinal tract would fail to perform its functions if the normal microbial balance in the body is disturbed. Maintaining the normal intestinal flora is an important part of internal cleansing. An internal cleansing agent should also eliminate the harmful pathogens from the gut.

While colon cleansing helps to flush out the waste matter from the gut, the liver aids removal of toxins accumulating in the blood. Hence, an effective internal cleanser should not only improve bowel movement by supporting the normal gastrointestinal activities, it should also help to protect the liver from illnesses.

How Triphala aids internal cleansing

In Sanskrit, Triphala means “three fruits”. This Ayurvedic preparation comprises of the fruits of Emblica officinalis, Terminalia belerica and Terminalia chebula. It is widely used in the traditional Indian medicine system as a digestive, colon cleanser, laxative and diuretic. Studies suggest that Triphala is also effective in protecting the body from adverse effects of toxic chemicals and radiation, thereby significantly reducing the risk of cancers. (Baliga MS. “Triphala, Ayurvedic formulation for treating and preventing cancer: a review.” J Altern Complement Med. 2010 Dec;16(12):1301-8). Triphala helps to improve bowel formation by increasing intestinal transit time, a feature that helps to treat diarrhea. (Biradar YS, Singh R, Sharma K, Dhalwal K, Bodhankar SL, Khandelwal KR. “Evaluation of anti-diarrhoeal property and acute toxicity of Triphala Mashi, an Ayurvedic formulation.” J Herb Pharmacother. 2007;7(3-4):203-12). The enteroprotective effect of Triphala might reduce the risk of gastric disorders and reduce intestinal inflammation.

How to treat constipation naturally

A healthy diet rich in plant-based foods could help to ease bowel movement naturally. Everyday we need 20 to 35 grams of dietary fibers. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are sources of soluble and insoluble fibers. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to the feces, helping them to move through the colon at a faster pace. Whole grains, wheat bran, seeds and peels of fruits and vegetables are the best sources of insoluble fibers. Besides easing bowel movement, dietary fibers also function as prebiotics. As prebiotics they supply nutrition to the healthy microbes that live in the gut. By maintaining the normal intestinal flora, prebiotics help to prevent overgrowth of harmful microbes. Citrus fruits, beans and lentils are the best sources of prebiotics. Besides supplying the body dietary fibers, fruits and vegetables in your diet would also help to elevate the antioxidant level in your body. Antioxidants are essential for protecting the vital organs in the body from oxidative stress. To increase intake of dietary fibers, you can take psyllium seed husk with plenty of water. Dry fruits such as dates, figs, raisins and apricots should be added to the daily diet to increase the frequency of bowel movement.

A diet rich in animal proteins and fats is a common cause of constipation. To boost the natural internal cleansing mechanism of your body, limit consumption of red meat, eggs and fat rich dairy products.

Drink plenty of water and fluid. The fluid in your diet helps to soften the stool, making it easier to pass the feces. Limit consumption of caffeinated beverages. Excess intake of coffee and carbonated drinks increases the risk of dehydration. Alcoholic beverages might cause dehydration.

Laxative overuse could cause chronic constipation. Bulk forming laxatives are a safer option for treating constipation. These laxatives contain dietary fiber. To ease bowel movement, they should be taken with plenty of water. People who are not accustomed to a dietary fiber rich diet might experience bloating and abdominal pain initially after consuming the fiber supplement based laxatives. It might take few days for your bowel movement to ease after taking the fiber supplement.

A sedentary lifestyle might slow down bowel movement. Lack of enough exercises is believed to be one of the prominent causes of constipation in the elderly and sick people. Exercises help to increase the stomach emptying time and the intestinal transit time. This reduces the rate of water absorption from the wastes passing through the gut. If the feces remain in the colon for a longer time, the lining of the colon would absorb excess water from the wastes, making the stool harder. To prevent the stool from staying in the colon for a long time, you should rush to the toilet the moment you experience the urge to defecate. Postponing defecation would make the stool harder, worsening constipation. Aerobic and stretching exercises might help to ease bowel movement. Swinging movements are especially beneficial for intestinal motility. Certain yoga poses could also help to ease defecation. Suyra namaskara, dhanurasana (bow pose), bhujangasana (cobra pose and the halasana (plough pose) could help to treat constipation by improving intestinal motility.

To prevent constipation, make defecation a part of your regular routine. After waking up in the morning, sit on the toilet at least for ten minutes.

Clinical Studies: (Triphala Herbal Colon Cleansing)

Triphala is composed of three fruits, namely Harada (haritaki), Amla (amalaki) and Behada (bibhitaki). Triphala Ingredients are Whole powdered fruits and/or herbal (fruit) extracts of Beleric myrobalan Bibhitaki, Chebulic myrobalan (Terminalia chebula)

Haritaki, Bibhitaki, Amalaki:

Amalaki (Amla, Indian Gooseberry, Emblic Myrobalan): Amla which is sour, astringent, sweet, pungent, bitter and cooling; Works on the Lungs, Liver, Stomach and Heart. Amla has a sour flavor which corresponds to the pitta humour and the fire element in Ayurvedic medicine. Amla is a source of antioxidants, flavonoids, carotenoids, and Vitamin C. It is the among the highest known land sources of vitamin C, Having 20 times the vitamin C content of an orange. This age and heat stable form of vitamin C in Amla is due to the presence of certain tannins that bind and inhibit its dissipation.

Haritaki (Harada, Chebulic Myrobalan): Harada has five of the six ayurvedic flavors but particularly a bitter flavor. It is associated with the vata humour as well as the air and space elements. It treats imbalances and diseases of the vata humour. The fruit, traditionally picked in the spring, is a rich source of tannins, amino acids, fructose, succinic acid and Beta Sitosterol. One of numerous studies of Harada demonstrated its 'anti-vata' or anti-spasmodic properties by the reduction of abnormal blood pressure as well as intestinal spasms. This confirms its traditional usefulness for heart conditions, spastic colon and other intestinal disorders.

Bibhitaki (Behada, Beleric Myrobalan): Behada is astringent, sweet, bitter, pungent and warm; Works on the Lungs, Heart and Liver. Studies of the fruit of Bihada found that it contains up to 35% oil and 40% protein. The oil is used in soap making and by the poorer classes as a substitute cooking oil for ghee. The sweet smelling oil is 35% palmitic, 24% oleic and 31% linoleic. Linoleic oil is an essential fatty acid important for increasing HDL cholesterol, associated with a healthy state and reducing LDL cholesterol, considered to indicate a higher-than-average risk for developing coronary-heart

A popular folk saying in India is, "No mother? do not worry so long as you have Triphala." The reason is that Indian people believe that triphala is able to care for the internal organs of the body as a mother cares for her children. Steep one tablespoonful of the powder or six capsules extract in an 8 ounce glass of water overnight. In the morning, strain the infusion through a clean cloth. The resultant tea is used to sprinkle over the eyes or used in an eyewash in an eyecup that can be readily purchased at most drug stores.
