Ulcers of the mouth should not be mistaken for cold sores which develop on the outer sections of the mouth. This article is going to discuss how you can treat your mouth ulcers most effectively.

5 Treatments For Mouth Ulcers

Antimicrobial Mouthwash

This helps in killing different types of bacteria, viruses and fungi that are capable of causing an infection inside your mouth. Such agents of infection are mainly the result of inadequate brushing of your teeth. Chlorhexidine gluconate is one of the most highly recommended mouthwashes and is easily available in pharmacies.

Doctors generally advise to use it only once a day and prescribe it only for adults. They may cause temporary brown stains on the teeth which can, however, be avoided by proper rinsing.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are medicines which help in reducing inflammation. Most prescribed medications for canker sores are known to contain a small dose of corticosteroid in order to alleviate the pain and swelling. Doctors insist on initiating corticosteroid medication as soon as the ulcer forms in your mouth.

Hydrocortisone is a common and effective corticosteroid and is packaged as a medicinal lozenge. One can have as many as four lozenges in a day without experiencing any side effects. However, children under the age of twelve will require a prescription for it.

Painkillers

In case the ulcer in your mouth is excruciatingly painful, your doctor will have no choice but to prescribe you a painkiller. Benzydamine is commonly prescribed in such cases and you can take it in the form of a spray or even a mouthwash. However, usage of benzydamine is not recommended for more than a week.

It may sting initially, but the stinging sensation is reduced over subsequent dosages. You could also sense a little numbness in the beginning. Pregnant women should seek a doctor’s advice before using any painkiller.

Milk Of Magnesia

Applying milk of magnesia on the ulcer has significantly helped a lot of people. It triggers an antacid effect which immediately counterbalances the acidic environment and changes the pH level. Thus, it now makes the affected area less favorable for any further bacterial growth and prevents any aggravation. You could also mix Benadryl allergy medicine with milk of magnesia and then wash your mouth well for a minute or two every day with this solution.

Spit it out and rinse your mouth well to avoid any stains. Mouth ulcers can be a great source of discomfort and it is no wonder people like to see them gone as soon as possible. Using any of the above treatments you can bid good riddance to your mouth ulcer in quick time.

As preliminary medication, doctors recommend using them three or four times a day. Some of the commonly available topical gels are Anbesol, Vanos, Apthasol and Lidex.
